Fans of The Gifted can expect the connection between the X-Men and the mutant underground to finally be explored in the two-part season 1 finale, which will air on January 15th, 2018. The X-Men have been name-dropped in numerous episodes, but so far, the series has been careful not to reveal many details about the mutant superhero team.

The Gifted picks up at a time when the X-Men have vanished, leaving mutants to fend for themselves while being hunted down mercilessly by Sentinel Services. Though the X-Men have been heavily teased throughout the series, no specific members have been named as of yet. Confusion over the timeline also keeps the show’s writers from making references to events in the X-Men films. What is known, however, is that the X-Men specifically chose Thunderbird (Blair Redford) to lead the mutant underground.

In a conversation with Comic Book , Emma Dumont, who plays Polaris in the series, revealed that the mutant underground’s connection to the X-Men will be a factor in the season 1 finale. Dumont says that the X-Men actually selected both Thunderbird and Polaris to take charge of the mutant underground:

Yeah, the X-Men, for many episodes we kept saying, ‘The X-Men chose us, the X-Men chose us.’ We find out now, the X-Men specifically chose Lorna and Johnny, Thunderbird and Polaris. They chose them. I don’t know if it’s because of their lineage, or if they have had their powers for a long time. You know, yeah, maybe their family histories, I’m not sure, but they chose them for some reason. Thunderbird had an easy time with it. He accepted the role of leader. He’s from the military, he knows what it’s like to lead, he knows what it’s like to save lives.

Dumont goes on say that the same isn’t necessarily true for Polaris, who has had a more difficult time dealing with the burden of leadership. According to Dumont, Polaris’ abandonment issues with her father, her mental illness, and her dark past have all made it hard for her to accept being a leader. While Thunderbird already seems somewhat comfortable with the role, Polaris will have to continue to grow into it.

It could be that the revelations in the season finale could have something to do with Polaris’ relationship with Magneto , which it’s been confirmed will be addressed eventually. It’s also a possibility that Thunderbird’s brother, Warpath, who is a member of the X-Men in X-Men: Days of Future Past, will be referenced as well
