The Walking Dead actor Josh McDermitt has picked how he would prefer his character, Eugene Porter, to be killed off if such a time ever arose. AMC’s post-apocalyptic zombie drama continued this week with Eugene-centric episode “Time For After ” which saw the mullet-topped coward re-affirm his allegiance to Negan, chicken out of exposing Dwight as a mole and begin his journey towards alcoholism. The episode was also notable for featuring Rick Grimes battling the Scavengers whilst wearing nothing but his underwear and a smile.
Although being cast in The Walking Dead – still a highly popular series despite a recent ratings decline – is surely a dream job for many an actor, it doesn’t offer much in the way of job security.
TWD has earned a reputation for killing off main characters suddenly, brutally and often in shocking and gruesome ways. Glenn, Tyreese, Lori and Shane are just a small selection of main characters that have bitten the dust during The Walking Dead‘s seven and a half seasons and with Rick’s group of survivors currently engaged in “All Out War” against the Saviors, that number is sure to increase very soon.
It is perhaps unsurprising then, that some of the cast have picked out a preferred method of disposal should their characters ever be killed off and Josh McDermitt has now revealed his ideal death scene. Writing in his EW column, McDermitt states:
“I don’t know that there is anyone more fun to watch do a physically intense fight scene than Andrew Lincoln. I told him and Greg Nicotero (resident badass) that IF Eugene were to die, I want to be choked out by Rick. Most actors have a “thing” — a look they can shoot to the camera, and that’s how they make their money throughout their career… I think Andrew Lincoln’s “thing” is choking people in a scene. It’s so intense you think he’s really trying to choke the guy.”
Certainly, many fans of The Walking Dead will know exactly what McDermitt is referring to. Andrew Lincoln’s infamous choke was once again on display in this week’s episode as he wrestled Jadis to the floor and actress Pollyanna McIntosh did indeed look in genuine discomfort. McDermitt’s proposed death scenario is also a realistic one given that his character betrayed Rick and Alexandria and switched loyalty over to Team Negan. Rick Grimes’ ruthless streak is well-documented and, given the opportunity, he’d surely love to squeeze the breath out of poor Eugene.
With that said, there’s still plenty of time in season 8 for the Saviors’ “scientific advisor” to regain his morality and return to the Alexandria fold, especially if Father Gabriel gets his way. The desperately ill priest is determined to turn Eugene back into one of the good guys and has repeatedly implored him to take Doctor Carson 2.0 to the Hilltop to assist the pregnant Maggie. If Eugene did indeed manage to deliver the Doc back home and make amends for his betrayal, a thorough choking from Rick would probably be off the table.
The Walking Dead continues December 10th with “How It’s Gotta Be” on AMC.
