Star Wars: The Last Jedi will feature a brand new lightsaber color that hasn’t been used on-screen before. In the beginning, George Lucas envisioned two lightsaber colors: blue and red. Blue has been traditionally used by Jedi, whereas red has been used by the Sith and various other dark side users. However, other lightsaber colors started working their way into the mix over time, most notably during the prequel trilogy, in which actors such as Samuel L. Jackson brandished their own lightsabers and lightsaber hues.

The first time audiences saw a different lightsaber color on the big screen was in Richard Marquand’s Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi , in which Luke Skywalker wielded a green-colored lightsaber throughout the movie. As fans will recall, Luke lost his father’s lightsaber during his epic duel with Darth Vader in Irvin Kershner’s Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back , and so he was forced to construct a new saber between episodes ( the subject of one of Episode VI‘s deleted scenes). Since the color blue wasn’t coming out clearly in the Dune Sea scenes, the Return of the Jedi production team decided to change the color to green. And now, audiences may see yet another hue appear on the silver screen.

In an interview with Parade, director Rian Johnson teased a new lightsaber color possibly appearing in Star Wars: The Last Jedi , though he refrained from providing any specific details (as is customary with anything and everything Star Wars-related). What’s more, the magazine’s wording seems to indicate that the upcoming sequel may give audiences a brand-new lightsaber hue, but it could also be referring to a color that’s simply not blue or red – the typical hues.

If the color is new, which color could Johnson be teasing? And who will be wielding the new saber? Rey is the obvious choice, who may receive her own lightsaber should she continue training in the ways of the Force, and should Luke take back his father’s lightsaber in the end. But the color of her saber may be determined by her connection to the Kyber crystal (and to the Force in general, if she chooses to turn dark or not). So far, the colors that have appeared in canon installments – including Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated shows – has been blue, green, red (if the Kyber crystal bleeds when used by a dark side user), white, yellow, Amethyst (reserved for Mace Windu), and black ( the Darksaber ).

The Last Jedi is right around the corner, so audiences shouldn’t have to wait too long to have their questions answered, along with potentially other lingering questions left unanswered at the end of
