Westworld season 2 has shut down production for safety in the midst of California’s wildfire season. The second season of the
HBO drama has shut down production once before due to an actor’s injury, but this marks the second delay in filming the popular series’ sophomore outing.

Westworld centers on a futuristic theme park set in a western landscape, which makes filming in California’s desert regions an ideal situation. Filming in locations like Castle Valley, Utah and Simi Valley, California, the production prides itself on taking advantage of gorgeous locales. In the wake of the worst fire season on record for California, however, it looks as if some of those locations might be threatened. California is in the grip of a massive Santa Ana, which includes high-velocity winds that are forcing multiple evacuations.

As three separate wildfires rage across the southern part of the state, HBO has suspended production on the series until the fire is under control. The cable provider released a statement to THR on the production’s suspension insisting everything is fine and they will resume production as soon as it’s safe to do so for all involved.

“Due to nearby wildfires, Westworld stopped production earlier today and will resume filming as soon as it’s safe to do so.
The series has been called twice as ambitious in its second season by showrunner Jonathan Nolan and it’s not hard to see why. In some new footage from Westworld season 2 , the series has teased multiple outdoor locations, making the decision to suspend production even more important. Nothing supersedes the safety and comfort of those working on the show despite their so-called “insane shooting schedule .”

Hopefully, the wildfires will soon be under control and both residents and productions affected by the natural disasters plaguing California can do their best to return to their jobs and lives as normal. While it’s unknown if it might affect the show’s targeted release date, HBO is making a smart decision for the production staff, actors, and everyone concerned.

Westworld stars Sir Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, Clifton Collins Jr, and Luke Hemsworth. The show has added Gustaf Skarsgard ( Vikings), Fares Fares ( Tyrant), Betty Gabriel ( Get Out), Jonathan Tucker ( Justified), Neil Jackson ( Sleepy Hollow), Katja Herbers ( The Leftovers) and Hiroyuki Sanada ( The Wolverine). The show is produced by showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.
