The Shannara Chronicles is set to finally introduce the legendary Sword of Shannara. With season 2 of The Shannara Chronicles bringing Will Ohmsford (Austin Butler) into conflict with his father’s old enemy, it stands to reason that he’ll need his father’s sword, the Sword of Shannara, to defeat him. The classic weapon, whose name served as the title for the first book in the Shannara series, is name-dropped in the promo for next week’s episode.
Season 1 of The Shannara Chronicles saw Will defeat the Dagda Mor, however, the character was unable to have the happy ending he wanted after Amberlee (Poppy Drayton) sacrificed herself to become the new Ellcrys. Will’s days of saving the world seemed to be over until the season 2 premiere, which saw Bandon (Marcus Vanco) go down a dark and dangerous path by attempting to resurrect the Warlock Lord, a Druid who was corrupted by dark magic, as well as the main villain of Sword of Shannara . Now Allanon (Manu Bennett), Will, and Eretria (Ivana Baquero) will have to work together to thwart Bandon’s plans.
The official promo for next week’s episode, titled ‘Dweller,’ reveals that the Sword of Shannara will play a role in Will’s currently unfolding struggle with Bandon and the Warlock Lord. In the promo, Allanon explains to Will that only the Sword of Shannara can defeat the evil Druid.
Bandon is also seen confronting Queen Tamlin, whose guards are unable to prevent him from walking right into the throne room. Bandon tells the queen that “ when it comes to the Warlock Lord, debts are always paid,” which suggests that the queen may have a secret connection to the dangerous villain. Also spotted in the promo is a monstrous giant spider that attacks Will, Allanon and the others. The spider could be a guardian of the Sword of Shannara, or one of the many obstacles the characters will face in their search.
The Sword of Shannara has a rich history in the books, having been used by Shannaras to defeat the Warlock Lord for hundreds of years. It was introduced as a weapon that could only be used by the true heir of the Shannara bloodline. In Sword of Shannara , the wielder of the weapon was Shea. In the TV series, it appears that the sword will find a new owner in his son, Will. In the books, the sword’s true power is that it forces anyone who touches it to accept the truth about themselves. It remains to be seen if this aspect of the sword will be brought to the TV series, and if so, how it will affect Will.
