It’s been in the pipeline for a long time, but The Addams Family CG animated movie has now started production. The creepy and kooky family’s return as an animated feature film locked in Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon earlier this month, and now the legwork has begun on the movie’s animation.
This will be the latest adaptation of the series, which started life as a New Yorker comic strip from cartoonist Charles Addams. Over the years, there have been a number of successful transfers to television and movies, with the modern yet morbid American family well remembered for the television show that ran from 1964 to 1966 and for the 1990s live action films The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. Reports of another adaptation started back in 2010, with Tim Burton rumored to be helming a 3D animated film adaptation.
The Addams Family CG movie is being handled by Cinesite Studios’ Vancouver site, as revealed by Deadline, with the studio working on the animation and digital visual effects for the project. This feature film has a script written by
Corpse Bride and Monster House screenwriter Pamela Pettler, which was confirmed back when it was first announced that The Addams Family reboot was back in development .
Cinesite Studios is perhaps best known for its work in the world of visual effects, with a strong list of credits featuring the likes of The Revenant , Independence Day: Resurgence, and Captain America: Civil War. In fact, Cinesite has been behind some standout moments in the world of digital visual effects, such as the big effects of 2015’s Ant-Man .
The studio is more of a fledgling one when it comes to feature film animation, though. Initially taking on feature animation in 2014, Cinesite Studios has a number of in-development projects, including Gnome Alone and
Charming . However, The Addams Family will be the first animated full-length project undertaken by its Vancouver studio, with the other movies being created by teams in Montreal.
With The Addams Family having only just started production, it’s too early to tell exactly how the film is shaping up, and whether the more outlandish gothic overtones of the 1990s films will be dropped in favor of the wit of the original comic strip. Either way, fans will be eager to learn more about the project, so they can gauge how Gomez, Morticia, and the rest of the Addams clan will fare in this iteration of the property.
